Google’s John Mueller: WordPress Not Naturally Much Better For SEO

Posted by

In reaction to a thread on Reddit, Google Search Supporter John Mueller states there’s no fundamental SEO advantage to utilizing WordPress compared to coding a site yourself.

A thread in the r/SEO forum asks a familiar question numerous practitioners encounter in their careers.

Is WordPress better for SEO than coding your own website?

Other variations of that question include, “is WordPress better for SEO than Wix,” or, “is WordPress better for SEO than [insert CMS here]”

No matter how you ask it, the answer is constantly the same.

WordPress isn’t naturally much better for SEO than any other choice. It’s one of many ways to build a site that ranks in Google.

Mueller On WordPress For SEO

In action to whether using WordPress is better for SEO than coding your own site, Mueller states:

“Not for SEO, however you can focus more on the content if you do not invest all your time developing a new CMS for yourself. (some people choose making a CMS, so YMMV).”

As Mueller states, the most substantial advantage WordPress offers is the ease of use compared to manually writing code.

Nevertheless, that’s only beneficial to the site owner. It makes no difference to Google if a website is developed with WordPress.

This question turns up often and is worth reviewing due to the misinformation circulating around WordPress and SEO.

For instance, take the second-most upvoted comment in the Reddit thread straight below Mueller’s.

A private claims, “Google understands WordPress well,” as though Googlebot can crawl WordPress sites more efficiently than other CMSs.

That’s false, though the misconception of WordPress being better for SEO continues to continue.
