It’s hot as heck outside, as is usually the case in Southeast Asia. But with recent heatwaves hitting Europe and other parts of Asia, we can only thank climate change for this unusual amount of heat we’ve been feeling.
Just the act of stepping out your front door might trigger a nervous sweat, before you actually start dribbling like crazy once you’re outside. But just imagine, if it’s already this bad for us, what’s it like for our four-legged friends?
Hot dogs (and cats), no more.

For small-to-medium-sized dogs and cats in Japan, there might be a new heat-beating solution on the rise, thanks to Tokyo-based maternity clothing company Sweet Mommy, which has teamed up with vets to design and manufacture special cat/dog vests that come with wearable fans.
“There was almost no rainy season this year, so the hot days came early, and in that sense, I think we developed a product that is right for the market,” says Rei Uzawa, President of Sweet Mommy, who felt sorry to see her pet chihuahua get exhausted so quickly whenever they went out on walks.
She is, of course, referring to the intense heat that has gotten a lot of people in Japan more than just a little bothered.

Following the end of the rainy season in Tokyo, temperatures exceeded 35 degrees Celsius for nine days in a row. The heatwave even prompted the Japanese government to encourage offices to turn off their lights during the day time so more power could be used for air conditioning.
When it has to come to drastic measures like that, you know it’s way too hot outside. While humans have multiple ways to stay cool during situations like this, our pets have less choices. That’s why the wearable fan, dubbed COOL DOG, comes at perfect timing.
Yes, despite its name, the vest can be worn by cats too.
Coming in five different sizes, the wearable fan vest is designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, for even the most fidgety of pets. The fan itself is snag-proof and quiet, so it won’t disturb the animal wearing it on its back. It’s powered by two AAA batteries and weighs only 80 grams. So even small dogs and cats will be able to support its weight effortlessly.

“I usually use dry ice packs (to keep the dog cool). But I think it’s easier to walk my dog if we have this fan,” says 48-year-old Mami Kumamoto, who owns two dogs.
Since the wearable fan’s debut in July 2022, the company has already received 100 orders. Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly) for those of us living outside Japan, we won’t be able to get these useful vests for our own pets. Checks on the website suggest it’s only available for delivery to Japanese addresses.
But just in case you do have a Japanese address, you can get the COOL DOG vest for US$74 (¥9,900) here.
