A man was shot Monday night outside a Beverly Hills steakhouse after he stepped outside for a smoke, police told City News Service.

The shooting occurred outside Nusr-Et Steakhouse Beverly Hills on North Canon Drive near Clifton Way, the Beverly Hills Police Department told KABC-TV Channel 7. The restaurant is next to Spago.

The man was shot by a bullet fired from across the street as he smoked, and he was taken to the hospital, according to KCBS-TV Channel 2. His condition was not immediately known Tuesday morning.

“My wife and I came downstairs to say hello to the guys at the valet and all of the sudden you hear, ‘Pop, pop, pop,’” said John Ferguson, 60, who is staying at the Maybourne Hotel in Beverly Hills on vacation.

Ferguson said he saw a person he thought was the shooter run away from the scene, and later saw the injured man put into an ambulance.

“My wife saw him move his arm,” Ferguson said.

The area by the restaurant, which is owned by “Salt Bae” butcher Nusret Gökçe, was blocked off by police tape Tuesday morning as Beverly Hills police investigated. A bullet could be seen shining on the sidewalk across from the restaurant. The window of the BNP Paribas bank across from Nusr-Et was shattered, with a small bullet hole near the base of the glass.

Workers at Nusr-Et declined to answer questions beyond acknowledging that there had been a shooting.
