Snapchat wants to be the king of AR shopping with its new glasses and filters

The future of shopping is definitively linked to the tech known as AR (augmented reality), and Snapchat wants to be the one leading the way.

Just last week, Snap – the parent company of Snapchat – launched a slew of new AR shopping features for its popular social video messaging app, and also introduced the world to a bunch of new hardware options made specially for enhancing the creator experience.

Lenses for shoppers.

The new AR shopping lenses on the Snapchat platform were specifically made to let users “try on” clothes and accessories from major brands like Puma, Prada, Dior, MAC, and many others.

To make use of the 2D Try-On feature, you’ll only need to take a few full body photos in any outfit and let Snapchat work its magic by virtually applying the chosen outfit to the image of your body.

This allows shoppers to try on items without ever having to visit a store in-person, and can even opt to purchase the ones they like directly from the brand’s online website.

Additionally, the AR lenses are incredibly accurate, and will allow for multiple color variations to give users as close to a real life browsing experience as possible.

According to a study cited by Snap, allowing customers the option to use AR to browse for items have led to a 25-percent decrease in returns, while interactions with products using AR have a 94-percent higher conversion rate.

Additionally, there are also the benefits of reducing waste in the form of returns, reducing the sanitary hurdles of testing beauty products, and also lowering the awkwardness and hassle of using dressing rooms.

Snap also demoed its upcoming next-generation Spectacles – a physical pair of glasses packed with AR functionality to allow users to overlay their Lenses directly onto the world around them. Each pair comes in two colorways – Mineral and Carbon, and will be available starting at US$380.

Finally, the brand also revealed Pixy – a pocket-sized flying camera meant to be a companion to Snapchat, with video and photos wirelessly transferred and saved into Snapchat Memories. From there, users can use Snapchat’s editing tools, Lenses, and sounds to customize and create their own content.
